Joshua Radin: "I learned a lot from Costello and McCartney after playing with them"

A few days after landing in our country, Joshua Radin makes a hole in her busy schedule to answer some of our questions and doubts. Stops in Barcelona (June 23, Music Hall) and Madrid (June 25, Berlin Café) to present his latest album, "The Rock And The Tide", but we can consider the shows as a presentation of his entire musical career ( is your first visit to Spain) and a preview of what will be their fourth studio album, "Underwater". The album will be released on 31 July, but excites the possibility of booking the LP through its website.
Q: Although born and raised in Ohio, we know that part of your family came from Europe, particularly in places like Poland, Germany, Austria and Russia. How do you think these backgrounds have been able to influence the way you do, understand and enjoy the music?A: I have relatives who also came from Sweden. However, I think culture has influenced me most is the Russian. I've always loved literature and clearly marked the way I write. A little existential.
Q: You studied drawing and painting at Northwestern University. However, I did you end up plumping for the world of music. Are you still attracted to other graphic expressions? Are you still working on paintings or some other type of artwork?A: I still think that a guitar, a paintbrush or a typewriter are only tools I use to express what goes through my head. In the end, no matter the tool, the medium becomes somewhat irrelevant, everything revolves around the creative inspiration that precedes the introduction of any type of tool. And yes, still paint and draw!
Q: Your song 'I'd Rather Be With You' reached number two in the list of the UK. Do you think this kind of achievement are less important now than before?A: I try not to look very seriously the numbers. It is difficult, but I feel happier when this world is not about competition, but that is about the expression of an idea to other people.
Q: Some argue that "Simple Times" is your best album, but what about "Underwater"? Will there be a new brand in your music career?A. I do not know, really. The fact that a band more than another means nothing as to whether to or not, or is more or less good. I think every one of my albums tells the story of where I was (or am) at a specific time. I think "Underwater" is different and special, so all I can hope for is that people find the magic in it.
Q: So can you tell us what is the difference between "The Rock and The Tide" and the latter?A: This album is more acoustic. Very melodic. And it is quite luxurious throughout the game guitar arrangements.
Q. And, what should that name?A: My doctors never allowed me to be under water since I have 5 years because I had a ruptured eardrum. It's a metaphor. This year my eardrum is healed, so I could swim underwater for the first time in years and the silence I heard inspired me to create a new album.
Q: Your music has appeared in many series such as Bones, Scrubs, Grey's Anatomy ... Do you still think your songs included in his scenes is important to find a mass audience? Can we hear some of your tracks in the coming seasons of Walking Dead and that kind of series?A: Who knows? The music industry changes every day.
Q: Hayden Panettiere was one of the actresses who appeared in one of your videos. Would you work again with you state actors / friends with those resumes?A: Not yet, but we'll see ...
Q: You've had the honor of sharing the stage with artists such as Paul McCartney, Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos and Gary Jules. Of all these artists, whose learned more?A: I would say that Elvis Costello and Paul McCartney.
Q: As a composer, what do you think affects how the current economic crisis at the time of writing the lyrics of your songs?A: Everything I do or experiment affects my lyrics.
Q: And what can you say about the record? Do you think they are still working in the wrong direction to go against piracy?A. The Pandora's Box has been opened and I'm not sure that can be closed. People have gotten used to steal music. Sucks, but it's reality.
Q: In a few days will be playing in Spain. Is it the first time you visit our country? (If so, can you explain when you were here?)A: This will be my first visit to Spain and I am ridiculously excited. All my friends tell me which is your favorite country to visit.
